Worcester Bosch Fault Codes Explained: A Brighton Engineer’s Guide

As Worcester Bosch Accredited Installers with over 20 years’ experience providing boiler repairs across Brighton and Hove, we’ve seen just about every fault code these boilers can throw up. While Worcester Bosch boilers are among the most reliable on the market, occasional faults do happen – and understanding what those cryptic codes mean can save you time, money, and stress.

Here’s our guide to the most common Worcester Bosch fault codes, what they mean, and what you should do about them.

How Worcester Bosch Fault Codes Work

Worcester Bosch boilers display fault codes on the digital display panel, usually starting with a letter followed by numbers (like EA, D5, or A1). These codes help engineers diagnose problems quickly, but they can also give you valuable information about whether it’s a quick fix or time to call a professional.

Important safety note: If you smell gas or suspect a carbon monoxide leak, don’t try to diagnose the problem yourself. Turn off the boiler, open windows, and call a Gas Safe registered engineer immediately – or the Gas Emergency Services on 0800 111 999.

The Most Common Worcester Bosch Fault Codes

Fault code meanings can vary slightly depending on your Worcester Bosch model. Always refer to your boiler manual or speak to a Gas Safe registered engineer for an accurate diagnosis.

EA Code (No Flame Detected)

This is probably the most common fault code we see in Brighton and Hove. The EA code means your boiler is trying to ignite but can’t detect a flame.

Common causes:

  • Gas supply issue (meter turned off, low pressure, or supply interrupted)
  • Faulty ignition leads or electrodes
  • Gas valve failure
  • Blocked condensate pipe (particularly common in winter)

What to do: First, check your gas supply – is your gas meter working? Are other gas appliances functioning? If it’s freezing outside, check if your condensate pipe (the white plastic pipe leading outside) is frozen. You can carefully thaw it with warm (not boiling) water. If these simple checks don’t resolve it, call a Gas Safe engineer.

D5 Code (Internal Fault)

The D5 code is a catch-all internal fault indicating issues with the boiler’s internal components or sensors. This isn’t one for DIY fixes and requires a qualified engineer to diagnose the specific problem, which could range from a faulty PCB to sensor issues.

A1 Code (Partial Blockage in Flue)

The A1 code indicates a flue system problem – the pipe that carries exhaust gases safely outside. Common causes include blocked flue terminals (bird’s nests, debris), incorrect installation, or excessive wind pressure. Check the external flue terminal for obvious blockages, but don’t dismantle anything. Flue faults are serious and require a Gas Safe engineer.

E9 Code (PCB Overheating)

The E9 code means the boiler’s printed circuit board (PCB) is overheating and has shut down for safety. Ensure the boiler has adequate ventilation and isn’t in too tight a space. If the fault persists, you’ll need an engineer to test and potentially replace the PCB.

224 or 227 Code (Flame Loss During Operation)

These codes indicate the flame was detected initially but lost during operation, often due to low gas pressure, faulty flame sensor, air in the gas line, or intermittent supply issues. Check other gas appliances are working, and if the problem persists, contact a Gas Safe engineer.

C6 or C7 Code (Fan Fault)

These codes relate to problems with the boiler’s fan, essential for drawing air in and expelling exhaust gases. Common causes include fan failure, faulty wiring, PCB faults, or blocked air intakes. This requires professional diagnosis and likely replacement – don’t operate the boiler with a fan fault as it’s a safety issue.

E5, E6, E8 or E83 Codes (Temperature Sensor Faults)

These codes indicate problems with temperature sensors that monitor water temperature in different parts of the system. Temperature sensor faults need professional attention to test sensors, check wiring, and replace faulty components with genuine Worcester Bosch parts.

Frozen Condensate Pipe

While not always shown with a specific code, a frozen condensate pipe is incredibly common during cold snaps here in Sussex and often triggers an EA code.

What to do: You can carefully pour warm (never boiling) water over the external section of the white plastic condensate pipe. If this resolves the fault and the boiler fires up, great – but consider having the pipe insulated or rerouted to prevent recurrence.

When to Call a Professional

Some fault codes are simple to investigate yourself – checking gas supply, resetting the boiler, or thawing a frozen pipe. However, most require professional diagnosis. Call a Gas Safe engineer for any fault code that returns after resetting, multiple different codes, codes related to gas supply or combustion (EA, A1, 224, 227), component failures (D5, E9, C6, C7), or if you’re unsure about investigating safely.

The Safe Gas Advantage

As Worcester Bosch Accredited Installers, we offer manufacturer training on Worcester systems, genuine parts, proper diagnostic tools, and expertise that means first-time fixes. Repairs by accredited installers also maintain your extended warranty.

Preventing Fault Codes

Regular annual servicing significantly reduces faults. During a service, we clean and inspect components, test safety devices, check gas pressure and combustion efficiency, and identify potential issues before they become problems. Annual servicing also maintains your extended Worcester Bosch guarantee – up to 12 years when installed by accredited installers.
