No Hot Water From Your Boiler? Causes & Fixes

There are few things more frustrating than turning on the tap for a shower and getting nothing but cold water. We see it all the time across Brighton and the surrounding areas. If you are suddenly searching for boiler repair Brighton, don’t panic just yet. In many cases, there are a few simple checks you can do yourself before you pick up the phone.

This guide will walk you through the most common reasons your boiler isn’t producing hot water, what you can safely look at yourself and when it is time to bring in a Gas Safe engineer.

No Hot Water

Common Reasons Your Boiler Has No Hot Water

Different boiler types behave differently, but the causes of hot water problems are often similar. Here are the issues we most commonly come across in homes in Hove, Haywards Heath and Worthing.

Low Boiler Pressure

If you have a combi boiler, low pressure is one of the most frequent causes of no hot water. Your boiler usually needs to sit somewhere between 1 and 1.5 bar. If it drops too low, the boiler may not fire up properly.

You can check the pressure gauge on the front of the unit. On digital models, it will usually be in the display menu.

Thermostat or Programmer Issues

Sometimes the problem isn’t the boiler itself but the controls. We often get calls where the heating is working but there is no hot water, only to find the hot water has been switched off at the programmer.

Check that:

  • The thermostat is set high enough
  • The timer is set to deliver hot water when you need it
  • There hasn’t been a recent power cut that has reset the clock

Diverter Valve Fault

In combi boilers, the diverter valve directs hot water to either the radiators or your taps. If your heating works but your taps run cold, a stuck or faulty diverter valve is a likely cause.

This is not a DIY fix. It involves internal boiler components and should be handled by a qualified engineer.

Frozen Condensate Pipe

During cold snaps, especially in more exposed areas like parts of Worthing near the seafront, condensate pipes can freeze. When this happens, your boiler may lock out and stop producing hot water.

You might notice a gurgling sound or see an error code on the display.

Airlocks or Blockages

In older systems, particularly in larger houses around Haywards Heath, airlocks or sludge build-up can restrict the flow of hot water. If the hot tap splutters or runs inconsistently, this could be the issue.

Quick Checks You Can Do Before Calling an Engineer

Before booking a visit, there are a few straightforward checks that are safe for homeowners and tenants to carry out.

1. Check the Boiler Pressure

If it is below 1 bar, you may need to repressurise the system using the filling loop. Your boiler manual will explain how to do this. If you are unsure, it is better to stop and call for advice rather than guess.

2. Reset the Boiler

Many modern boilers have a reset button. If the boiler has locked out due to a minor fault, a simple reset can get it running again. If it repeatedly locks out, that is a sign of a deeper issue.

3. Check Other Taps

If one tap has no hot water but others do, the issue may be with that specific tap rather than the boiler.

4. Look for Error Codes

Modern boilers display fault codes. Make a note of the code before calling an engineer. It can speed up diagnosis and may even allow us to advise you over the phone.

5. Make Sure the Gas Supply Is On

It sounds obvious, but we have attended properties where the gas has been accidentally turned off during other work. If you have a gas hob, check whether that is working.

When to Call a Professional Boiler Engineer

If you have checked the basics and still have no hot water, it is time to bring in a qualified professional. Anything involving internal components, gas supply or repeated boiler lockouts needs proper attention.

You should call an engineer if:

  • The boiler keeps losing pressure
  • You suspect a diverter valve issue
  • There are unusual noises like banging or kettling
  • The pilot light will not stay lit
  • You can smell gas, in which case call the Gas Emergency number immediately

We regularly attend properties in Hove, Haywards Heath and Worthing where the issue turned out to be something fairly minor, but it always needs confirming by someone who is Gas Safe registered.

How to Prevent Hot Water Issues in the Future

Most hot water problems we see could have been avoided with regular maintenance. Boilers work hard, especially in winter, and a yearly service makes a big difference.

Book an Annual Boiler Service

A service allows an engineer to check pressure levels, inspect key components, clean parts and spot early signs of wear. It is far cheaper to replace a small worn part than deal with a full breakdown in December.

Keep an Eye on Pressure

It only takes a few seconds to glance at the pressure gauge every so often. If you notice it dropping regularly, get it checked before it becomes a bigger issue.

Protect External Pipework

If your condensate pipe runs outside, make sure it is properly insulated to reduce the risk of freezing. This is a common winter call-out.

Consider Upgrading an Older Boiler

If your boiler is over 12 to 15 years old and regularly causing issues, it might be more cost effective to replace it. Newer models are far more efficient and reliable. We often speak to homeowners who have spent several winters patching up an ageing system before deciding enough is enough.

Hot water problems are stressful, especially if you have children at home or tenants relying on you to fix things quickly. Start with the simple checks, and if you are unsure at any point, do not take risks with gas appliances. If you need experienced local help, Brighton Plumbers are always on hand to diagnose the issue properly and get your hot water running again.
